Starting Solids Workshops in Adelaide

Evidence-based support for confident, safe and responsive feeding

Let’s Start Solids Adelaide provides specialist starting solids education and infant feeding support for families in South Australia. Led by an AHPRA-registered Occupational Therapist with infant feeding expertise, our service helps parents introduce solids with confidence, clarity and trust in their baby’s cues.

We offer small-group starting solids workshops and individual consultations for families preparing to introduce solids or feeling unsure about how to begin.

Who this service is for

Our starting solids workshops are designed for parents and carers of babies who are:

  • Approaching or around 6 months of age

  • Showing early signs of readiness for solids

  • Being introduced to solids using:

    • purées

    • baby-led weaning

    • or a mixed approach

  • Thriving overall, but where parents want clear, developmentally appropriate guidance

This service is also suitable for families who:

  • Feel anxious or overwhelmed by conflicting feeding advice

  • Want reassurance about safety, gagging and choking

  • Are unsure how to balance milk feeds with solids

  • Want to start solids in a responsive, baby-led way

What our starting solids workshops cover

Our workshops are practical, evidence-based and grounded in infant development. Topics include:

  • How to recognise true readiness for solids

  • When to start solids and how this fits with milk feeds

  • Developmentally appropriate textures and progression

  • Purées, baby-led weaning and mixed approaches — what matters most

  • Understanding gagging vs choking and feeding safety

  • How to support positive early feeding experiences

  • Responding to your baby’s cues with confidence

  • Common myths and misinformation about starting solids

Workshops focus on building parental confidence, not rigid rules.

Who runs Let’s Start Solids Adelaide

All workshops and consultations are run by an Occupational Therapist (OT) with experience in infant feeding and early development.

An OT-led approach focuses on:

  • Feeding readiness and oral-motor development

  • Posture, positioning and environment

  • Baby-led skill development rather than food performance

  • Supporting calm, positive and responsive mealtimes

This complements — rather than replaces — advice from child health nurses and GPs.

Frequently asked questions

Is this baby-led weaning?

We support baby-led, responsive feeding, whether that includes purées, finger foods or both. The focus is on your baby’s development, not a single feeding method.

Do you cover allergies?

Yes. We discuss safe and appropriate introduction of common allergens in line with current Australian guidelines.

Is this a feeding therapy service?

Let’s Start Solids Adelaide provides education and early feeding support, not feeding therapy. If feeding difficulties are identified, families can be supported with appropriate next steps.

Do I need a referral?

No referral is required.
